Why does this land seem to be badly hurt?

It was torn apart by global warming!

The ecosystem in the permafrost zone of the Tibetan Plateau is sensitive and fragile. Global warming triggered the ground surface subsidence caused by thawing of ice-rich permafrost. The phenomenon is called thermokarst (one form of permafrost degradation).

What are scientists trying to do?

They went there to collect plant and soil samples with the assistance of local workers so as to find out the ecological consequences of permafrost collapse.
